NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Pfizer Inc. has said it will sell Celebrex, the arthritis drug that treats pain, to treat a patient who was hospitalized and died after an operation.
Pfizer, a maker of prescription arthritis drugs such as Celebrex and Merck & Co., will own the rights for Celebrex until early next year, Pfizer said on Thursday.
The move could help the company to develop a new treatment for chronic pain and lower the cost of pain medications.
"This is a big opportunity for Pfizer and the entire Pfizer family," said Robert G. Zuger, Pfizer's chief financial officer.
The pharmaceutical company has long sought approval for Celebrex, which reduces the pain that most doctors prescribe for arthritis, but the drug is expected to be available in the United States by the end of the year.
Pfizer is now seeking approval for a second version of Celebrex, with the drug expected to be available in the United States by the end of the year.
A spokesman for the pharmaceutical industry's top-selling drug, Vioxx, said the company's patent on Celebrex expired in April. The drug's makers will be able to sell it as a generic until early next year.
Pfizer said it was working on a new treatment for arthritis, called "indomethacovir." The company said it has not had results on any of its arthritis drugs since it began selling the drug in 1998.
The company also is interested in selling Celebrex to treat a patient who had a heart attack in 2006.
It is unclear whether Pfizer's Celebrex will sell to treat arthritis, or other types of pain.
The pharmaceutical company has no plans to sell its own Celebrex.
The company will continue to market the arthritis drug and its rival Celebrex to physicians and patients.
